The Independent review
The independent review, commissioned by Government, looked into each element of the electricity supply chain, including generation, transmission, distribution and supply. In the review, Professor Helm set out what he saw as the failings of the current market framework and structures.
The government has the ambition for the UK to have the lowest energy costs in Europe, for both households and businesses. The specific aim of Helm's review was to report and make recommendations on how these objectives, and keeping to carbon targets and ensuring security of supply, can be met at minimum cost and without imposing further costs on the exchequer. In this evidence session, the Committee will be keen to explore Professor Helm's recommendations and how workable they are in the context of the Government's overall energy and climate change policy.
Purpose of the session
The session is likely to explore areas such as carbon pricing, low carbon technologies, energy networks, R&D and industrial strategy.
