Committee concludes inquiry examining governance of statistics
29 March 2019
The Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee (PACAC) holds the final session of its inquiry into the work of the UK Statistics Agency (UKSA) on Tuesday 2 April, with witnesses from UKSA set to be questioned by members of the Committee.
Having heard from civil society, academic, media and policymaking representatives about the usefulness of existing statistics, the Committee will in the final session of its inquiry hear directly from key personnel at the UK Statistics Authority on its work. The Committee will hear from Chair Sir David Norgrove, National Statistician John Pullinger, and Director General for Regulation Ed Humpherson.
The Committee is expected to question the panel on how well UKSA has been meeting its statutory objective – to promote and safeguard official statistics that ‘serve the public good' – since it was established in 2008. Having heard throughout its inquiry about ways in which UKSA could do more to provide data that meets the needs of key stakeholders, the Committee will also seek an understanding about how UKSA sees its work evolving in the future; and whether its current governance structures are appropriate for delivering its aims and objectives.
