Review of the Balance of Competences between the UK and the EU

Inquiry

Background

The inquiry follows the completion of the Review of the Balance of Competences between the UK and the EU, which concluded on 18 December 2014, following over two years of evidence gathering and analysis by the Government.

At the end of each semester, the Committee wrote to the Minister for Europe, the Rt Hon David Lidington MP, assessing whether the reports acknowledged relevant Committee Reports and scrutiny work where appropriate; whether they adhered to the neutral and factual tone promised by the Foreign Secretary when he announced the Balance of Competences Review in July 2012; and judging how successful each report was in securing a diverse and balanced range of stakeholder input.

Once the Review was completed, the Committee considered the overall conduct of the Review, and considered what the impact of the Review may be.

The Report was published on 23 March 2015 and the Government and Commission responses have been received.
