Foreign Affairs Committee urges Government to start the process of determination for declaring the treatment of Uyghurs a genocide

26 November 2020

Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Tom Tugendhat MP, has written to Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab MP urging the Government to take 'formal steps towards determining whether the Chinese Government's policies in Xinjiang constitute genocide'.

The UK Government's response thus far has been that it is the place of a "competent court" to determine such definitions, pointing to a difficulty with proof of intent. The letter emphasises a number of examples that may constitute proof of intent under the Genocide Convention.

The Committee is expecting a response by 8 December.

The Committee is currently undertaking an inquiry into Xinjiang detention camps.
