Committee visits HMP Swansea
17 July 2018
The Welsh Affairs Committee travels to HMP Swansea as part of its inquiry into prison provision in Wales.
HMP Swansea
HMP Swansea has operated as a Local Prison since 1922, holding Category B male prisoners and young adult males. It has a current occupational capacity of 515, having opened a new G Wing in September 2015. HM Prison and Probation Service's Prison Annual Performance Ratings for 2016/17 saw the prison rated as a 2, indicating its 'overall performance is of concern'.
The Committee's work on this inquiry so far has featured testimony from witnesses including prison officials, union representatives, prison reform charities, the Chief Inspector of Prisons, Acting Prisons and Probations Ombudsman, and the Welsh Language Commissioner. The Committee has also travelled to HMP Berwyn and HMP Parc on similar fact-finding visits.
Chair's comments
Ahead of the visit, Committee Chairman David T.C. Davies MP said:
"During this inquiry we have identified a number of key issues relating to prisons provision in Wales, such as prisoner safety, living conditions, drugs and substance use, healthcare and Welsh language provision.
Having heard from a number of interested parties, and visited Berwyn and Parc prisons, we are looking forward to hearing from the Governor, staff and inmates at HMP Swansea about these and other issues that matter to them, and discussing how we ensure the Welsh prison system offers the best chance for rehabilitation."
