Purpose of the session
The Committee's inquiry focuses on the importance of tourism to the economy and society of Northern Ireland more widely and the ways in which the industry could be improved or further supported. In this first session, the Committee hears from the General Manager of Visit Derry and the Chief Executive of Visit Belfast. Derry/Londonderry was the inaugural UK City of Culture in 2013. Belfast's tourism sector has benefited from the development of events and major attractions, such as Titanic Belfast.
The session will cover a broad range of issues relating to tourism in Northern Ireland such as the geographic distribution of tourism, the seasonality of tourism and the future growth of the industry. The Committee will also consider the role of tourism in addressing legacy issues, and how tourism that involves engagement with Northern Ireland's history can be conducted sensitively.
