EU Scrutiny Committee hears from former UK permanent representative to the EU

    • Purpose of the session

    The inquiry explores how EU laws and policies may continue to affect the UK after it has left the EU – with or without a deal – and what changes may be needed to the current system of parliamentary scrutiny. The Committee will question witnesses on the reach and impact of EU laws and policy in different Brexit outcomes and how they may interact with domestic and law and policy in the future.

    In this session, the Committee will hear first from researchers at the Hansard Society and the Institute for Government, and Professor Adam Cygan of the University of Leicester.

    The Committee will then question Sir Ivan Rogers, who was the UK's permanent representative to the European Union between 2013-2017. The Committee is expected to question Sir Ivan on the likely relevance of EU law and policy under the different scenarios for the future UK-EU relationship, as well as his views on the continuing negotiations regarding the Northern Ireland ‘backstop'.
