Government promises clear plan on clean cars – after failure on transport emissions
11 November 2016
The Government has announced it will set out new plans to boost the uptake of ultra-low emission vehicles (ULEVs), like electric cars, in its response to the Environmental Audit Committee's report on Sustainability in the Department for Transport.

The report criticised the fact that emissions from the transport sector had risen over the past 2 years, and targets to reduce those emissions by 2025 will be missed by almost 50%. The EAC report had raised concerns that the Department for Transport had no medium-term strategy to promote ULEVs after 2020.
Ministers have now said that details of their next steps to enhance the take-up of cleaner vehicles, such as electric cars, to 2020 and beyond will be included in their forthcoming emissions reduction plan for the whole economy.
Chair's comments
Commenting on the Government's response, EAC Chair Mary Creagh MP said:
“Transport is now the highest emitting sector of our economy and the Government is set to miss its climate change targets for the sector. That's unacceptable. To meet our decarbonisation targets and keep air pollution within legal limits, the Government needs a new strategy to increase the uptake of cleaner vehicles, such as electric cars. We look forward to seeing it"
