Academy finances examined by Committee

21 October 2016

The Education Committee hears evidence from senior Department for Education civil servants, as well as the National Audit Office's Comptroller & Auditor General as part of its continued scrutiny of financial management at the Department for Education. The hearing examines the finances of academy schools.

Witnesses

Tuesday 25 October 2016, Committee Room 5, Palace of Westminster

At 9.45am

  • Sir Amyas Morse KCB, Comptroller and Auditor General, National Audit Office

At 10.30am

  • Jonathan Slater, Permanent Secretary, Department for Education
  • Howard Orme, Director General, Strategy and Resources, Department for Education
  • Peter Lauener, Chief Executive of the Education Funding Agency, Department for Education

Purpose of the session

The hearing is the first time the Committee hears from the new Permanent Secretary, and follows an evidence session earlier this year in which the Education Committee questioned Chris Wormald, then Permanent Secretary, on the Department's decision to extend the deadline for publishing its annual report and accounts for 2014-15.

In addition to financial oversight of academy accounts, the session also explores higher education finance, as well as financial support for adoptive families.

Chair's comment

Neil Carmichael, MP, Chair of the Education Committee, said:

"This session is our latest opportunity to ensure robust scrutiny of the Department for Education's finances, as well as its oversight of the finances of individual academy accounts. We are keen to press the new Permanent Secretary on what the DfE is doing to get a grip on its financial management and we are pleased to have the opportunity to hear from the Comptroller and Auditor General on the NAO's view of DfE's finances."
