Committee visit Gibraltar to examine progress of border negotiations

8 July 2022

A cross-party delegation from the European Scrutiny Committee visited Gibraltar on 5-7 July in a fact-finding mission on the progress of negotiations on the future management of the territory’s border with Spain.

MPs on the Committee met with senior ministers in Gibraltar’s Government including its leader, Chief Minister Fabian Picardo, and his Deputy Joseph Garcia who both briefed them on the current state of negotiations ahead of the next round in Madrid on Wednesday 6 July.

The Committee also met with representatives from the Gibraltar Federation of Small Business, the Gibraltar Chamber of Commerce, and the Gibraltar Finance Centre to discuss what businesses want from negotiations.

Later, Committee members visited the border to see first-hand how it operates and how potential delays can rapidly escalate to gridlock and met with blue card holders – Brits resident in Gibraltar - who have been affected by more stringent border enforcement by Spain.

The Committee recently opened an inquiry on negotiations with the EU in respect of Gibraltar.
