Committee requests Lex Greensill respond to questions on Liberty Steel & future of UK steel industry inquiry

30 June 2021

Darren Jones MP, Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) Committee Chair has written today to Lex Greensill with a series of questions relating to the Committee’s inquiry on Liberty Steel & the future of the UK steel industry.

Lex Greensill had been in contact to indicate he would be willing to engage with the Committee’s inquiry but would not be available to appear, as requested by the Committee, for the evidence session on 29th June.

Chair's comment

Darren Jones, Chair of the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee, said:

“It is disappointing that Lex Greensill has declined to appear before the BEIS Committee to answer important and legitimate questions as part of our inquiry Liberty Steel & the future of the UK steel industry.

“Greensill Capital was in receipt of tax-payer backed guarantees through the Coronavirus Large Business Interruption Loan Scheme (CLBILS). The least that Parliament and the public would expect is for Mr Greensill to show some responsibility and answer our Committee’s questions relating to how this money was used to help us scrutinise access and use of these funds.”

Darren Jones, BEIS Committee Chair, had previously written to Lex Greensill to formally request his attendance at a session of the Committee’s inquiry on 29th June. The response from Lex Greensill is available here.
