The Liaison Committee is holding a one-off evidence session on the recommendations of the former Citizenship and Civic Engagement Committee. In the review of investigative and scrutiny committees, the Liaison Committee recommended that the Committee may hold a small number of evidence sessions to follow-up a special inquiry committee's recommendations. This is the fifth such session.

The Liaison Committee will be joined at the one-off evidence session by former members of the Citizenship and Civic Engagement Committee: Lord Hodgson of Astley Abbotts (former Chair), Baroness Barker, Lord Blunkett and Baroness Eaton.

Possible questions are:

  • What role, if any, does delivery of citizenship education and civic engagement programmes have to play in the Government’s levelling up agenda?
  • What have Ofsted and the NCS achieved in terms of delivering effective citizenship education and civic engagement since 2018?
  • In 2018, the Committee recommended that Ofsted should undertake a review of the current provision and quality of citizenship education in schools and highlight best practice. Has this been actioned?
  • How does the Life in the UK Test measure progress towards active citizenship?

It is anticipated that the Liaison Committee will publish a report on the outcome of the evidence session with a Government response to the report to follow.
