MPs hear from Welsh Government minister on devolution of benefits

The Committee will first hear from the Welsh Government’s Minister for Social Justice, Jane Hutt MS. They will likely cover topics ranging from the Welsh Government’s proposed Universal Basic Income pilot to the lessons which have been learnt from the covid-19 pandemic in ensuring people have access to the benefits they need. The further devolution of benefits is also likely to be raised, in light of the recent Co-Operation Agreement reached between the Welsh Government and Plaid Cymru.

The Committee will then take evidence from organisations working with different groups of claimants in Wales, learning about claimants’ experiences with the benefits system. Issues likely to be discussed include financial pressures, issues for people with disabilities and long-term health conditions, as well as housing costs.
