Background

The session forms part of the Committee’s inquiry into the future of the news, which is looking at the financial future of the sector, technological development, the role of impartiality and declining public trust.

Possible areas for discussion

Possible areas for discussion with witnesses include:

  • Ofcom’s role in responding to the influence that tech platforms have on access to the news, and its impact on media plurality;
  • Whether Ofcom’s regulation of due impartiality is being carried out effectively and consistently; and
  • How well the BBC and other Public Service Broadcasters are serving their audiences in terms of access to high quality, impartial news services;
  • What Ofcom is doing to ensure that the implementation of the Online Safety Act does not lead to legitimate opinions being stifled.
