Work Work of the Serious Fraud Office (Regular evidence sessions)

MPs on the cross-party Committee will take evidence from the new Director for the first time since he took up the position on 25 September 2023. Discussion is expected to focus on the recent history of the organisation; its resources, staffing and technology; how its investigations and cases progress; the challenges it faces with data and disclosure and how it looks after victims.

The SFO is a specialist prosecuting authority which tackles the top level of serious or complex fraud, bribery and corruption, much of which has an international dimension. It was created and given its powers under the Criminal Justice Act 1987 and was established in 1988. In addition to investigating and prosecuting criminal cases, the SFO aims to recover the proceeds of crime.

Nick Ephgrave has more than 30 years of experience in senior roles in UK law enforcement. He previously served as Assistant Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Service and Chief Constable for Surrey Police. Most recently, he was Chair of the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) Criminal Justice Co-ordination Committee.
