House of Lords leaders questioned on the role and composition of the Upper House
The Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee will hear from the Leader of the House of Lords, the Shadow Leader, and the Convenor of the Crossbench Peers, on Tuesday 14 May, as part of its inquiry into the membership of the House of Lords.
Meeting details
The fourth and final evidence session will be an opportunity for the Committee to reflect on evidence received throughout the course of the inquiry, and gather views from leaders of several key groups in the House of Lords on the appointments system, the size and membership of the chamber, its role and its relationship with the House of Commons.
MPs are likely to ask whether the size of the House of Lords should be reduced and capped, whether there should be a mandatory retirement age and term limit for peers, and whether there should be a continuing role for hereditary peers and Lords Spiritual in the House of Lords.
The Committee is also likely to discuss the robustness of the appointments process, considering the role of House of Lords Appointments Commission (HOLAC) and asking whether the appointments process requires reform.
