Entry/Exit: What are the Government doing to minimise risks of border delays?
Government Ministers Tom Pursglove and Guy Opperman will be questioned by the European Scrutiny Committee as it wraps up oral evidence for its inquiry into the implications of the introduction of EU entry/exit checks at the border.
Meeting details
The EU’s Entry/Exit scheme, slated to be introduced in the autumn, will require all non-EU residents to register their biometrics before travelling. However, with an app supporting this reportedly delayed until summer 2025, as things stand all biometrics registration would need to take place at the border. The Committee heard in written and oral evidence that this could cause significant delays and hours-long tailbacks in Dover, potentially leading to delays for coach trips and lorries transporting food items.
MPs on the Committee will ask Ministers what the Government is doing to minimize the risk of border delays, including what infrastructure is being put in place and what diplomatic approaches have been made to Brussels.
