Will Government plans to cut net migration work?

In December 2023, the Government announced a five-point plan to reduce levels of net migration, in addition to previous restrictions to student visas. It says these measures are expected to reduce overall net migration to 300,000. New measures include raising the salary threshold for Skilled Worker and family visas, and a ban on social care workers bringing dependants.

Work Legal Migration (Non-inquiry session)

In this evidence session, the Home Affairs Committee will examine the impact of the new measures. This will include the impact on net migration figures, and the benefits and risks to wider Government aims. It will consider whether the changes to the Skilled Worker visa route will have the desired effect of reducing migration in the short and longer term. It will also investigate what more needs to be done to tackle labour market exploitation.
