“What is holding back UK businesses from exporting more?”, ask MPs
The Business and Trade Committee hears from trade associations, businesses and experts on support for UK exporters.
Meeting details
The UK Government has committed to a target of £1 trillion in annual exports by 2030. In February 2024 Nus Ghani, a Department for Business and Trade Minister, said the Government was “within touching distance” of achieving that objective.
But many businesses say that they face significant obstacles to exporting their goods. In a British Chambers of Commerce survey of nearly 1,000 UK businesses, nearly half said the top barriers to exporting were costs, disruption, tariffs and customs procedures.
MPs are likely to ask whether the Government’s £1 trillion exports goal is useful or achievable, and what barriers businesses currently face in contributing to that goal.
They are also likely to hear about how Germany and Japan support their exporters, and what lessons this might have for the UK.
MPs may also ask UK businesses currently exporting whether the Government is providing enough support, and what opportunities they see for growth.
