Meeting details
Purpose of the session
Fraud is the most prevalent form of crime in the nation, with 3.2 million offences recorded by Crime Survey of England and Wales for the year ending September 2023. Despite falling from a high of 5 million offences per year during the pandemic, there are fears that this will rise in coming years.
Computer based fraud, such as phishing scams or hijacking websites, had risen by a third in one year and is estimated to now cost the UK economy £2.3 billion. This form of fraud often crosses international borders, with an estimated 70% of crimes originating from overseas.
In this evidence session, the Committee will examine the response by Government and strategic agencies to the growth in fraud and emerging trends in how criminals operate. It will look at the impact of strategies and policies to combat fraud, such as the Fraud Strategy and Economic Crime Plan. It will examine the impact of fraud on the UK, including serious organised crime and fraud against the public sector.
