How are broadcasters supporting minority languages?
The Culture, Media and Sport Committee will hold the first evidence session of its inquiry exploring the health and future of minority languages in the UK, and how the Government can support and develop them. In this session, MPs will focus on the role of broadcasting in the maintenance and growth of minority languages in the UK.
Meeting details
In the first panel, the cross-party Committee will hear from organisations that deliver broadcasts in minority languages across the UK: the BBC, S4C in Wales and MG Alba in Scotland. MPs are likely to examine how broadcasting can sustain minority languages, the financial sustainability of these broadcasters and the impact of the Media Bill.
The challenges that these minority language broadcasters face, and how the UK Government and devolved governments can go further to support them may also be discussed.
In the second panel, Members will talk to individuals broadcasting for the Scots, Ulster-Scots, Irish and Cornish communities about their own experiences. Questions are likely to be asked about their personal views on the importance of broadcasting in minority indigenous languages, how it can contribute to growing the language, and how it might attract new audiences.
