The third oral evidence session in the Energy Security and Net Zero Committee’s keeping the power on inquiry will examine the role of bioenergy in the UK’s future energy technology mix.
Meeting details
Likely areas of questioning
Representatives from the bioenergy sector are likely to be asked about the Government’s biomass strategy and the current sustainability of the industry. There could also be questions on what role bioenergy with carbon capture storage (BECCS) could play in reducing the country’s emissions and how incentives in the sector are structured.
Biomass can be used to produce bioenergy in the form of electricity, heat, biogas or transport fuels, or to produce materials and chemicals According to the Government, in 2022, bioenergy accounted for 11% of UK electricity generation, with this figure having grown considerably over the past decade.
