Committee to question major broadcasting directors on the growth of Women’s Sports
In the fourth session of its inquiry, the Culture, Media and Sport Committee will explore the challenges and opportunities faced by major broadcasters in growing women’s sports.
Meeting details
UK women’s sport is predicted to generate £1 billion in revenue by 2030. Despite this, it currently accounts for less than one seventh of the total hours of sports coverage on TV.
The cross-party Committee will likely question the panel about their plans to increase coverage, if this will support the growth of women’s sport, and the differences in coverage between men and women’s sport. Questions may focus on challenges broadcasters face when broadcasting women’s sport, and how broadcasters can capitalise on growing audiences.
The Committee could also focus on the listed events regime in the Media Bill and what steps broadcasters have taken to tackle sexism within their media organisations. They could also explore the issues surrounding the broadcasting rights valuation of the FIFA Women’s World Cup and future plans to showcase more women’s sport at events like the 2024 Olympics.
The session follows confirmation by the CMS Secretary of State, in response to a question in the House of Commons today from Committee Chair Dame Caroline Dinenage MP, that the Government will publish its response to the Carney review into Women’s Football shortly.
