Benefit levels in the UK: Work and Pensions Committee to hold session on contribution-based and insurance-based benefits
The Work and Pensions Committee holds an evidence session focussing on the role of contribution-based and insurance-based benefits in the UK and other OECD countries.
Meeting details
The first panel of witnesses will be made up of policy experts from think tanks and the Association of British Insurers, with questions likely to focus on the effectiveness of benefits including New Style Job Seekers Allowance and Employment and Support Allowance. The Committee might also ask about any lessons that could be learnt from the introduction of earnings-related income support during the pandemic.
The second panel, featuring representatives from the OECD, France and Sweden, will then face questions on the role of benefits supporting jobseekers in other countries. Witnesses are likely to be asked about how unemployment insurance schemes are financed, payment rates, the duration of payments and conditionality requirements.
