DEFRA Minister Mark Spencer to face MPs on environmental threats to food supplies

Minister for Food, Farming and Fisheries at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Rt Hon Mark Spencer MP, will be giving evidence to the Environmental Audit Committee.

Meeting details

At 2:15pm: Oral evidence
Inquiry Environmental change and food security

The meeting marks the final evidence session for the EAC’s Environmental change and food security inquiry. The session will explore the UK’s preparedness for and resilience to future food supply stresses or shocks caused by climate change, biodiversity loss and other environmental changes.

In particular, EAC members are likely to reflect on evidence it has heard to date with the Minister, including criticisms of the Government’s Food Strategy that it fails to consider how to enhance resilience in our food system. They will also discuss how DEFRA is working with farmers to achieve food security in the face of more extreme weather, flooding and droughts, and how policy to dedicate more land to nature recovery and carbon sequestration sits with the amount of land used for livestock farming. They are also likely to talk about eating habits that are good for our health and the health of the planet.
