Inquiry Nuclear energy in Wales

In the final session of its inquiry into nuclear energy in Wales, MPs will first hear from Simon Bowen, who advised the UK Government on the establishment of Great British Nuclear; and Welsh Government-owned nuclear development company Cwmni Egino.

Cwmni Egino is tasked with creating a business plan for the construction of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) at the Trawsfynydd site next to the decommissioned nuclear power station. The company’s ambition is that Trawsfynydd becomes the site of the first UK SMRs.

Likely topics of discussion for the first panel include where the development of new nuclear power goes from here, and what the UK Government’s involvement should look like. Members are likely to question the witnesses on key challenges in the areas of funding and skills to reflect the views heard so far in this inquiry.

MPs will then hear from the Secretary of State for Wales, Rt Hon David TC Davies MP, and Rt Hon Graham Stuart MP, Minister of State for the recently formed Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.

The Committee will discuss the evidence that has been heard throughout the inquiry and ask for the Minister’s views on potential developments at Wylfa and Trawsfynydd. Other likely focuses include how much of a priority nuclear energy will be for the new Department, when the Government will launch Great British Nuclear and what its remit will be.
