Rwanda scheme: National Audit Office to produce factual report on plan’s costs

12 December 2023

The Home Affairs and Public Accounts Committees today jointly publish correspondence from the National Audit Office (NAO), which confirms it plans to publish a report in 2024 on costs around the Rwanda asylum plan.

Dame Meg Hillier MP, Chair of the Public Accounts Committee, and Dame Diana Johnson MP, Chair of the Home Affairs Committee, both wrote to the NAO’s Comptroller and Auditor General (C&AG) Gareth Davies on 8th December, requesting that the NAO look into the costs of the scheme and its value for money.

The NAO has now confirmed that it will produce a factual report covering the costs incurred to-date and the Department’s estimate of costs when the scheme is operational.

Chairs' comment

In response to the C&AG’s correspondence, the Chairs said:

“Both of our Committees have long called on the Home Office for greater transparency around the Rwanda asylum plan. It is essential that Parliament is in full possession of the facts around a scheme of such high public interest.

As the Government has thus far been unwilling or unable to provide these facts, we are grateful to the National Audit Office for its forthcoming work to keep the taxpayer informed on the plan’s costs, both to date and when the scheme becomes operational."
