Committee visits Manchester Piccadilly station

14 June 2023

On Tuesday 6 June, the Select Committee on the High Speed Rail (Crewe - Manchester) Bill visited Manchester Piccadilly station ahead of considering different proposals for the location of the new high-speed station proposed by the Bill.

The High Speed Rail (Crewe - Manchester) Bill makes provision for the construction of a new surface-level turn-back station at Manchester Piccadilly. However, several organisations – including Manchester City Council, the Greater Manchester Combined Authority and Transport for Greater Manchester – have petitioned against the Bill, proposing that the new station should be built underground and as a through station.

Ahead of a series of hearings on this issue, the Committee undertook a walking tour of the area around Manchester Piccadilly station, to see the locations of proposed works and understand the practicalities of the existing and alternative proposals.

The Committee was accompanied on the visit by representatives of Manchester City Council, the Greater Manchester Combined Authority and Transport for Greater Manchester, as well as engineering experts from HS2 Ltd and officials from the Department for Transport.

The Committee is due to hear representations from petitioners on the issue of the location of the new high-speed station at Manchester Piccadilly in the weeks commencing Monday 12 and Monday 19 June. The Committee’s forward programme of public hearings can be found here.
