Nadine Dorries faces DCMS Committee for first time as Culture Secretary

19 November 2021

The Committee expects to examine the new Secretary of State’s priorities, such as the impact of Covid-19 on the UK’s cultural industry, the future of the BBC and Channel 4, and the ability of public service broadcasters to procure the rights to screen major sporting events as part of the Committee’s regular scrutiny of the DCMS Department’s work.

The purpose of the session

Sports policy is on the agenda, following the Committee’s hearing with Azeem Rafiq and its examination of racism at Yorkshire County Cricket Club.

The Department’s handling of key public appointments is also expected to be explored. The Committee has previously raised concerns about the appointment process for the Chair of communications’ regulator, Ofcom. Separately, the Committee will focus on online safety and online harms with questions to the Secretary of State on the future of scrutiny in the area of online safety.
