Minister examined on aid programmes to the Middle East and North Africa

7 January 2022

The House of Commons Sub-Committee that scrutinises the work of the aid watchdog, the Independent Commission on Aid Impact (ICAI), will question the Rt Hon James Cleverly MP, the Minister for the Middle East and North Africa, following an ICAI report that contained criticisms of government aid programmes in the region.

Purpose of the Session

The Minister will attend a question-and-answer session of the Sub-Committee which will probe an ICAI report on aid programmes that can contribute to tackling unemployment in the region, and the government’s response to the report. The Commission’s report found that there was only “limited” evidence that the UK aid portfolio had been effective at meeting its job-creation goals.

The session with the Minister follows an earlier evidence-gathering meeting of the Sub-Committee which questioned senior officials involved in writing the ICAI report.
